Walk, Bike To School, Oct. 4

MnDOT announced that thousands of students from more than 200 schools across Minnesota will participate in International Walk and Bike to School Day on Oct. 4. The annual event is sponsored by Minnesota Safe Routes to School. Register at; walkbiketoschool.org.

Middle School Confrontation

Step parent Michael Martinez has filed a formal complaint against Bemidji Area Schools’ superintendent Jim Hess after an alleged confrontation between the two earlier this month, following a searching for his stepson at Bemidi Middle School. Go to; bemidjipioneer.com for more on the story.

BSU 24-Hour Play Fest

Hunter Found in Cass County

Deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office located a missing hunter in a difficult to access wet swampy area of the Chippewa National Forest Tuesday. The individual was treated on scene and transported by Remer Ambulance to a Deer River Hospital for evaluation.

Student Injured in Bus Accident

A northbound school bus on Highway 169 on Tuesday afternoon in Eagle’s Nest Township was on the soft shoulder in a construction zone when it ended up in a ditch. 15-year-old passenger Natalie Rae Fultz was transported to Ely Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

FSN Receives Grant

The Family Safety Network serving Cass County was the recipient of a $3,000 Community Investment Grant from Enbridge Energy Funds, it was announced on Tuesday. the funds will support FSN’s efforts to provide direct services for victims who have experienced domestic violence.

Pedestrian Killed on Hwy. 2

24-year-old Louise Hvezda died after being struck by a car Tuesday evening near Shevlin. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the young woman inexplicably walked into the westbound traffic lanes of U.S. Highway 2 at around 7:46pm.

BHS Students Nominated

Some Bemidji High School current and former students are nominated for National High School Student Production Awards. A basketball promo, produced by senior Jace Peterson and recent graduates Cody Roder and Nick Harrom is nominated. So is a show by senior Luc Berard. They’ll know if they won on Oct. 3.

Twin Cities ACS Walk Oct. 7

The American Cancer Society “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” event in the Twin Cities is scheduled for Saturday, October 7th at U.S. Bank Stadium. Franken Proposes Free Textbooks

Sen. Al Franken hopes to make college more affordable with a proposal to expand access to free online textbooks, through the Affordable College Textbook Act. Last year, books and supplies averaged $1,250, and 65 percent of students didn’t buy a book due to cost.
