MPCA Salt Warning

The MPCA reminds Minnesotans that we scatter an estimated 365,000 tons of salt in the metro area each year. But it only takes a teaspoon of salt to permanently pollute five gallons of water.

Vikings Sign Snapper

Contenders are beefing up their rosters for the post-season, and long snapper Jeff Overbaugh will make his NFL debut for the Vikings this Sunday. Minnesota signed Overbaugh on Tuesday to replace Kevin McDermott, who suffered a dislocated left shoulder last Saturday at Green Bay.

DNR Says Ice Thickness Varies

Minnesota DNR reports inconsistent ice thickness on area lakes continues to be a safety issue for anglers and anyone driving ATVs, OHVs or snowmobiles. The fatality rate this season is already higher than the last two combined. DNR Walker reports ice thickness on Leech Lake is very inconsistent, ranging from 6 to16 inches.

Probation for Former Leech Lake Cop

Shannon Larry Northbird of Cass Lake– who received nude images of a 17-year-old while on duty as a Leech Lake police officer in December 2016, will have a child pornography charge dismissed after 90 days if he complies with his conditions of probation. The continuation of dismissal doesn’t require him to enter a plea.

Mobile Home Fire

No one was hurt yesterday morning when a mobile home caught fire about two miles north of Bemidji. Located at the Secluded Acres mobile home park, the trailer ignited at about 9:30 a.m. after someone tried to thaw some frozen pipes using a portable heater.

Record Cold Wednesday

Bemidji tied a record on Wednesday for the coldest-ever December 27 at 32 degrees below zero. A Wind Chill Advisory has been warning of the dangerously frigid conditions for several days.

DoR Requests Comments on Software Tax

The Minnesota Department of Revenue requests comments on its possible amendment to rules governing sales and use tax as it applies to sales and purchases of computer software. Submit comments through the Office of Administrative Hearings Rulemaking e-comments website.

Narrow Escape on MN Thin Ice

Three people narrowly escaped a Chevy Suburban after it went through the ice on Little Detroit Lake at around 6:40 p.m. Christmas Eve, and the county sheriff is urging residents to be careful as ice conditions can change quickly.

MN Woman Scammed on Dating Website

A Minnesota woman, suffering from depression and short term memory loss, was scammed out of more than $60,000 after meeting someone through the online dating website,, according to court filings. The woman’s daughter– who has power of attorney– reported to Shakopee police that her mother sent wire transfers and cash to Texas and Nigeria, as part of the credit card fraud.
