Law Enforcement Honored in Bemidji

About 50 police officers, deputies and civilians gathered Thursday evening to honor the 129 members of law enforcement killed in 2017, including one from Minnesota. The annual memorial ceremony has been held in Bemidji for more than 15 years.

Trooper Hurt In Crash

A head on crash involving a Minnesota State Patrol trooper and another driver Tuesday afternoon in Lakeville… Police say 35 year old Sgt. Mike Krukowski was in his Chevrolet Tahoe squad vehicle and headed south on Kenrick Avenue shortly before 4pm yesterday, when a northbound minivan driven by 29-year-old Wesley Briggs veered off Interstate 35, crashed through a barrier fence, and slammed into the trooper’s vehicle head-on. Krukowski was pinned inside his vehicle, but he was freed by first responders and taken by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Briggs was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center with serious injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Memorial Weekend Potluck Scheduled At Clearwater Lake

The Clearwater Lake Area Association will hold a Memorial Weekend meeting and potluck meal on Sunday, May 27th, at Moore’s Garage. It’s easy to find… just eight houses east of the public access. The board meeting will be held at 3, followed by the potluck at 5. If you plan on going, you are asked to bring one of your favorite dishes… along with plates, utensils, and a lawn chair. Coffee and lemonade will be provided. The meeting is open to the public.

Granddaughter Of Minnesota Philathropist Arrested For Embezzlement

The granddaughter of a Minnesota philanthropist has been arrested after investigators say she stole from her former employer. 48 year old Tawnee Nasseff is charged with six counts of theft by swindle for misappropriating about $860,000 from a St. Paul law firm she worked at for nearly 20 years. Nasseff is the daughter of the late John “Mickey” Nasseff Jr. and the granddaughter of the late John Michael Nasseff… a senior West Publishing executive before becoming one of St. Paul’s most prolific donors. He died in February. Tawnee Nasseff was fired from her job as a bookkeeper at Paige J. Donnelly Ltd. after the law firm discovered the theft.

Bimidji Grad Plans Career As Firefighter

Eighteen-year-old Kaleb Pemberton has lofty plans for his future. After he graduates this year from Bimidji High School, he will be studying wildland firefighting, and then he will become a professional firefigher. In fact, he already has plans to join a firefighting crew in Red Lake. The all-school graduation is scheduled for Saturday, May 26.

Law School Hit By Declining Applications

The University of Minnesota School of Law says it has been hit by such a steep drop in student applications, that it can’t balance its budget without even more help from the rest of the university. The U has already given the law school almost $40 Million to cover budget shortfalls since 2012. In fact, now the subsidy has reached $7.5 million annually, and there is a proposal out there to bump it up to $12 million by 2020-21. The law school has seen its applications fall by more than half since 2010.

Annual Spring Plant Sale Saturday

The Bemidji Garden Club and the Beltrami County Master Gardeners will hold their annual Spring Plant Sale from 9 to 11 this coming Saturday morning, at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds inside the 4-H and Extension Building. The sale will include a variety of sun and shade perennials, native plants, annuals, vegetables, seeds and herbs. The proceeds from the sale will go for gardening education and public garden maintenance in Bemidji.
