Two fishermen had to be rescued over this past weekend from Upper Red Lake, after a sheet of ice they were on detached from the main shoreline. The two were treated for hypothermia. It’s a reminder that ice fishing on Lower Red Lake and Upper Red Lake is prohibited until they are deemed safe. Both lakes are still among dozens that have not yet accumulated a safe amount of ice. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says there needs to be at least 4 inches of ice for a person… 5 to 7 inches for snowmobiles or ATVs, and for cars and small pickups, a minimum of 8 to 12 inches is needed.
