PRISON POPULATION RACIAL GAPS STUDIED

A new national report cites positive steps in closing racial gaps within the U.S. prison population. But the report’s authors caution there’s a lot of work left to do, and Minnesota’s numbers suggest a wide racial gap persists. Adam Gelb is the president and CEO of the Council on Criminal Justice….

The report doesn’t break the numbers down by state, but information from Minnesota corrections officials suggest there’s still a wide gap. At only seven-percent of the state’s population, African Americans represent more than 35-percent of the prison population.

PET FIXERS JOINING GREAT RIVER RESCUE

Pet Fixers, a nonprofit spay/neuter assistance program, has announced that the
organization will be turned over to Great River Rescue. The two organizations are currently in the process of transferring equipment, technical knowledge, and all other assets including the Pet Fixers spay/neuter trailer with the goal of completion by early 2020. Great River Rescue will continue providing low-cost spay/neuter services to low-income residents in the region as Pet Fixers has done for the last seven years. Pet Fixers Board Members will work alongside Great River Rescue staff and volunteers to ensure a smooth transition and high level of service to the community.

OFFICIAL MINNESOTA CHRISTMAS TREE IS NOW AT THE GOVERNOR’S RESIDENCE

Foresters from Department of Natural Resources cut down the official state of Minnesota Christmas tree in General C.C. Andrews State Forest in Pine County. The balsam fir, which will decorate the Governor’s Residence, is about 40 years old and 25 feet tall. The tree was set up at the Governor’s Residence in St. Paul on Tuesday, and it will be lit on Thursday, weather permitting. Private tree farms in Minnesota contribute about $30 million to the state’s economy each year.

Today’s event is from 5 to 6:30pm at Brigid’s Pub on Beltrami Ave NW, Bemidji. Tomorrow’s event in GRAND RAPIDS will also be held from 5 to 6:30pm, at Rapids Brewing on Pokegama Ave in Grand Rapids.

Free Turkeys Handed Out

Hunger Solutions this year, teamed up with the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association to ensure that families in need got turkeys for their holiday meal. The association says roughly 11-thousand turkeys were distributed this
