Some grant mone will now go to help the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office step up its efforts against drunk driving. A new DWI enforcement officer position will be created, thanks to the grant money, which will provide about $82,000 to fund the position through the end of September. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the grant allows the department to access more manpower without putting the burden on county taxpayers. It comes after the state program Toward Zero Deaths lists Beltrami County as one of the “25 deadliest counties for impaired driving.” The Bemidji Police Department already has a DWI enforcement officer. With the creation of the new position, Beltrami County will now be one of only four counties in the state that will have multiple DWI enforcement officers.
