Updated Details Released On Fatal Crash Near Grand Forks

An update today on a fiery crash Wednesday night, that shut down southbound traffic on Interstate 29 near Grand Forks. 57 year old Wayne O’Connell of Shelly was killed after he was ejected from his 1953 Ford Pickup. 53 year old Timothy Mack of South Dakota, the driver of the other vehicle… a semi hauling cattle that rear-ended the pickup… was not injured. No cattle were hurt in the crash. Charges are pending and the whole thing remains under investigation.

New Bemidji Superintendent

Bemidji Area Schools now has a new superintendent. On Monday, Tim Lutz signed off on a three-year employment contract that sets Lutz’s salary at $165,000 this coming fiscal year, and ramps up to $170,000 in the final contract year… the 2020-2021 school year. The contract also calls for 25 vacation days and a $6,500 vehicle allowance annually. Lutz has led Kelliher Public School since 2008. His first official day on the job at Bemidji Area Schools is July 1st.

ND GOP Candidate Drops Out

The Republican Party’s endorsed candidate for North Dakota secretary of state has dropped out of the race following a news report of a 2006 “Peeping Tom” incident on the North Dakota State University campus. Will Gardner announced his departure on Sunday afternoon in a social media post to his campaign’s Facebook page. Gardner beat the GOP incumbent in April.

Beltrami County Sheriff’s Reports

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Thursday at approximately 7:16 p.m., an unidentified 23-year-old female and 35-year-old male were arrested for unspecified drug offenses in the area of the 8500 block of Division Street W. in Bemidji.

At 6:22 a.m. on Thursday, an unidentified 30-year-old female was arrested by Beltrami County Sheriff’s deputies for outstanding warrants at the intersection of Alaska Lane and Lumberjack Road NW in Bemidji. Details specified within the warrants were not released.

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office reports that at 10:55 p.m. Thursday, a 26-year-old male was arrested for domestic assault and obstruction of justice in the area of the 500 block of Justice Road NW in Bemidji. No names were released.

Crash Victim Identified

The victim of a fatal crash in Central Minnesota has been identified as 62-year-old Kevin Erickson, killed Friday night when his vehicle collided with a farm implement on state Highway 15. The driver of the tractor, 56-year-old Peter Peterson, was not injured.

Man, Child Die in Kayak Accident

42-year-old Jesse Anderson of Norwood, Iowa and his 4-year-old child died after their kayak overturned on Hart Lake Saturday. A family member reported the accident. The 4-year-old was found in the overturned kayak, but died Sunday in Minneapolis after being taken off life support. Anderson was found dead Sunday morning. Neither victim was wearing a lifejacket.

DMV Denied

Despite pleas from the DMV deputy registrar for rescue funds, they got nothing from the Minnesota Legislature Sunday.

Lynx Lose Home Opener

The Minnesota Lynx pregame championship ring ceremony was memorable and the Target Center crowd was electric, but the Los Angeles Sparks spoiled the defending WNBA champions home opener on Sunday, 77-76. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve thanked the fans and the team’s staff to start off her postgame press conference on Sunday, before addressing their sluggish performance. The Lynx were 3-0 in their three previous season openers following titles.

BFD Plans 4th Station

The Bemidji Fire Department is planning to expand north to better serve the Greater Bemidji population of 35,000 people. The Bemidji City Council will hear a request today from fire officials to lease a building in Northern Township, which would be the home to a fourth fire station. Read more at; bemidjipioneer.com.

Congress Considers Net-Neutrality Repeal

The U.S. Senate passed a joint resolution last week to block the FCC’s recent decision to repeal net-neutrality protections. Tim Karr, senior director of strategy and communications for Free Press said the measure faces an uphill battle in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
