School Board Cuts

As the Bemidji Area School board looks to make hefty cuts to their budget, House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler says the state needs to do more. Superintendent Tim Lutz mentioned in his presentation that the two percent per-pupil funding formula increases granted to schools each biennium hardly keeps up with inflation, which Winkler says needs to be changed. That said, The Bemidji Area School Board voted five to one to close the aging Central Elementary School. Newly-elected board member Dr. Gabriel Warren was the sole no vote, while Ann Long Voelkner, Jeff Hack, Jeff Lind, Sarah Young and Carol L. Johnson voted for.
